Etosha National Park

Our travels lead us to Etosha National Park. For the next few days we will explore arguably the best National Park in Namibia and one of the best wildlife locations in all of Africa.

This area was proclaimed a National Reserve by the Germans in 1907. It was elevated to the status of National Park by the South African in 1967. It encompasses some 22 900 sq/kms and gets its name from the pan that takes up 23% of the entire park. The word Etosha in the local language means ‘Great White Place’ which is appropriate for the Etosha Pan.

In 1886, the forts at Namutoni and Okaukuejo were stations for the German military and solders were order to shoot migrating animals to prevent the spread of rinderpest to the cattle farms further south. These remnants of a more brutal past for the wildlife of this area are still on display and form part of the current Namibian Wildlife Resorts at each Namutoni and Okaukuejo.

The park is home to some amazing wildlife and to some of Africa’s rarest like the Black Rhino. The white sands make the elephants appear to be white as they meander through the bush. It is a stunning location and must, for any travel to Namibia. I hope you enjoy the photos from our game drives through this amazing park?
